While the choghadiya is popular in North India, South Indians consider Nalla Neram that is derived from Gowri Panchang. Nalla Neram, which means ‘auspicious time’ in Tamil, is the time that gives you the desired results, if an activity is undertaken during that time. The Tamil way of matching the Panchang, Gowri Panchang (Tamil Panchangam) is used to calculate auspicious time and date for Shubha Muhurat, or Muhuratam in Tamil.
Majorly, the Gowri Panchangam can be divided into two parts — Day Gowri Panchangam & Night Gowri Panchangam. The time between sunrise and sunset is the Day Gowri Panchangam, while the time between sunset to the next sunrise is considered as Night Gowri Panchangam.
Just like the choghadiya, there are both good and bad Gowri Panchangam. This Panchangam divides the day and night into eight equal parts. Nalla Neram are the favorable periods out of these. Amridha, Uthi, Laabam, Sugam and Dhanam are considered to be the five main good Gowri Panchangam. Visham, Rogam and Soram are the bad Gowri Panchangam.
