2089 Yama Deepam is also termed as Dhanteras. Basically, on Yamadeepdaan, a small lamp (Diya) is lit to worship Lord Yama.

Yama is worshipped by the devotees to keep them safe and sound throughout. This occasion is considered to be very auspicious and holds utmost significance for the devotees.

This occasion is related to a very interesting story of a sixteen-year-old son of King Hima.

As per the story, he was doomed to die by a snake-bite on the fourth day of his married life. It is said that on the fourth day of his marriage, his wife didn’t let him sleep.

She laid all her ornaments made of gold and silver at the entrance of the room and lit small lamps (Diyas) all over the place. Then, she started singing and narrating stories to her husband.

Hence, when Yama came in the form of the serpent, his eyes got blinded with the dazzling ornaments. Therefore, he couldn't enter the prince chambers.

He climbed the mountain of the ornaments and sat quietly there to listen to the songs and stories the whole night. In the morning, he went away peacefully.

Thus, the wife saved her husband from the clutches of the death. Since the day of Dhanteras was named as Yamadeepdaan.

Lamps are lit since then on this day, which is dedicated to the God of death, Yama.
